當代學者杭廷頓在「我們是誰」一書中指出,超國家特性的出現,反而加劇了身分認同的狹窄化。歐洲整合,國界逐漸模糊,各國內部族群卻更著重自我的獨立定位。

杭廷頓以大不列顛為例指出,愈來愈多的蘇格蘭人稱自己為蘇格蘭人(Scottish ),而非英國人(British)。他斷言,大不列顛的聯合王國(UK)到本世紀上半期,有可能和蘇聯一樣走入歷史。

美國喬治亞州奧古斯塔城,有一位叫馬提.貝克的牧師,十九年前興建了一座社區教堂,因為經營得法,現在已經有了一千多位教友。四十五歲的貝克牧師很開放,教友可以穿牛仔褲作禮拜,講道畫面也上網供教友下載,教堂樂團還能演奏「史密斯飛船」的搖滾樂。

遠赴劍橋 師從盧瑟福

  庚款的意思是庚子賠款,大家都知道。那本來是賠英、賠美等國的款項,然後又退還給中國。庚款後來成立了獎學金,公開招考,讓國內的大學畢業生競爭。南京東南大學畢業的李國鼎,北京燕京大學畢業的張文裕,分別在第二(一九三四年)、第三屆庚款留英考試中考取。他們的志願都是去英國的劍橋大學,都是物理系。楊振寧則是第六屆錄取的,那是一九四三年的事了。

Library to Host National Traveling
Exhibition: 'Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend'

Lehman College's Leonard Lief Library will host the traveling exhibition 'Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend'(August 23 to October 6), which commemorates the 400th anniversary of the death of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Lehman was the only New York State venue chosen to host this exhibition, which has visited close to 40 public and academic libraries nation-wide. The exhibition is free and open to the public.

Based on a 2003 exhibition at the Newberry Library of Chicago, 'Elizabeth I: Ruler and Legend'features photo reproductions of items such as Elizabeth's Great Seal, a 40 foot drawing of her funeral procession, letters and speeches in Elizabeth's own hand, a 1587 drawing of the execution of Mary Queen of Scots, and more than 100 books, manuscripts, maps, letters, paintings and artifacts. Numerous portraits dating from Elizabeth's early reign to her last days on the throne will also be featured.
